Sonoma Floral Designer: DIY Mason Jar Floral Arrangements

Today I thought I would share a couple DIY floral arrangement tips inspired by our Thanksgiving dinner table center pieces. This is really easy, and the best part is that you can use the steps involved to create any style, color palette and use any flowers you choose.

We wanted to do something a bit less traditional for our flowers and went for Autumn brights instead of the common neutrals for Thanksgiving.

See the steps below for a little floral DIY...

The first ingredients are Mason Jars and raffia.

We filled about six Mason Jars with flowers and placed them down the runway of the dinner table. This was perfect since Mason Jars are low enough to see over, which encourages conversation.

Multiple Mason Jars add a more festive feel to the table, instead of one large center piece.

The main flowers we went for were: (from left to right)

Hot Lady Roses

Red Celosia

Thistle

Hypericum Berries

Billy Balls

Dried Wheat

Dried Oak Leaves

The colors of these flowers played well with the dishes we served on our dining table.

Once you have your flowers picked out line up all your Mason Jars.

Then start filling them with your flowers.

I began with roses since they are the largest.

then i filled in with all the rest.

Let the creativity shine as you fill in the Mason Jars--you can't go wrong!

Our Dining room table has a special feature--a carved canyon that goes through the center--which is perfect for filling with center pieces! And perfect for a floral designer to get inspired by!

As you can see the Autumn Brights were very festive and cheerful and all of our guests loved them!

UC Berkeley Inspired Rehearsal Dinner

Did you fall in love at college?

Recently we did a rehearsal dinner for a couple who had fallen in love while attending UC Berkeley. They used the Cal colors of Blue and Gold as their theme. And their tables names had photos of their favorite spots on campus. Since they were getting married in Singapore, and most relatives and friends will not be able to be there, this was their reception party, and it was a Great celebration.

We used Cobalt Blue hydrangeas , blue delphinium and larkspur for the blue flowers. And for the yellow- gold we used bright yellow roses, billy balls, yarrow, lilies, orchids and tulips.

Floral Design for Amy Kuschel Wedding Salon

It has been such fun and an honor to design the floral arrangements at the Amy Kuschel Bridal Salon in San Francisco. It is in the heart of the fashion district in Union Square and is truly a beautiful salon. The environment is glamorous and spacious, in bridal white and silvery blue accents, with lots of windows and natural light pouring through. Perfect for seeing the white and ivory palette of the gorgeous wedding dresses to choose from.

All the brides love finding the special dress for their wedding day. They say the women who are on Amy's team make it a great experience, and help them find the perfect dress tailored just for them.

What I like is that Amy designs her dresses right here in San Francisco. And they are also sewn in her studio. "My designs come from an evolution of ideas that can be executed in many ways. I love the creative process, the excitement and challenge of trying to find the perfect harmony between silhouette and fabrication."

Royal Wedding Inspiration

What a spectacular wedding of The Prince of England, The Duke of Cambridge and her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.

Kate's bouquet was a hand wired shield of Lily of The Valley, Sweet William , Hyacinth, and Myrtle.

Princess Grace wore a similar bouquet for her royal wedding.

Soon we will see if this fashion of bouquet will be top on Bride's lists for 2011.

Kate looked stunning in her long sleeved dress with lace appliqué bodice, satin gazar pleated skirt and nine-foot train.

A simple, timeless and elegant choice designed by Sarah Burton.

The Hats- the Hats! But we can't forget the hats! This is where artistic style has no boundaries! And always completes the outfit!

We can already see how The Royal Highness will be influencing trends for couture now and in the future!

San Francisco Floral Design at "Bouquets to Art 2011"

I am honored to have been one of the featured designers of the Bouquets to Art show held at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. This is a great fundraiser and extravaganza of flowers and Art held each year, and not to be missed. For one week you can view beautiful masterpieces of Art with gorgeous interpretations of flowers by their side.

This year I was given the Stela of the Mayan Queen Ix Mutual Ahaw, AD 761.

Although the Stella itself is made of simple limestone, I wanted to convey the lush landscape and colorful mythology that surrounds the ancient Mayan culture through vibrant materials found in the jungle.

The Queen's headdress was my inspiration.

To honor the femininity of this rare warrior queen I used bold materials like orchids, ginger, and birds of paradise.

My goal was to reflect the enchanting themes throughout the 8th Century Mesoamerican artifact and bring the Stela to life through flowers.

In the end I added a twist of snake on the pedestal, since the snake is so important spiritually in the Mayan culture.

Sonoma Wedding at Atwood Ranch

Today Danielle and Nic's wedding is featured on the world famous blog for all Bride's and wedding enthusiasts, Style Me Pretty.

This was such a wonderful wedding. The couple being totally head over heels in love for one another set the tone. You can't help but smile!

The gorgeous photos were done by Sasha Gulish. She did an amazing job capturing every sweet moment.

The venue, Atwood Ranch is a gem in Sonoma County. Julie Atwood the owner and Wedding Planner, did an amazing job orchestrating all the details and giving Danielle and Nic the opportunity to have their wedding vision be perfect.

We loved doing all the flowers and are proud that our couple said they couldn't be happier.

Sonoma Wedding Floral Designer: Everlasting Floral Keepsakes

An alternative to using fresh flowers throughout your wedding is using silk and dried flowers. We offer keepsakes for bridesmaids, flower girls, and Mom's by creating silk floral pieces.

Here are a few things we have made for our Brides.

These kiss balls are light and easy to carry without falling apart.

This wreath, called a Krenzi, was made for a Mom to wear. In Jewish custom, when the bride is the last in her family to marry, she and her sisters honor the mother with a tradition known as Krenzi, in which they crown their mother with flowers and perform a dance of honor.

Tropical Hawaiian Style Wedding

There are many romantic themes to inspire your wedding vision.
But one of my favorites is tropical Hawaiian.

With so many details you can choose from, your guests will be sure to feel the true Aloha spirit. A luau can be done anywhere, and is always romantic and fun.

Hawaiian Lei is a symbol of "aloha" which means love.

The lei that is exchanged between a bride and groom represents an eternal commitment and devotion to one another.

Each flower lei consists of 40-50 fresh flowers strung on a cotton thread.

A wedding lei is usually made with tuberose, orchids, roses and ti leaf.

My favorite is Plumeria. It smells wonderful!

Instead of a veil a bride can wear a garland of island flowers, or a single flower worn on her left side signifying she is taken.

This is called The Hawaiian Wedding Song "Virgin", and is used in bouquets or in the hair.

Stephanotis or "pua male", is the marriage flower, and is used in leis and bouquets.

There are a great variety of tropical flowers to choose from and they last for a week.

Some flowers for a beautiful ceremony..

A traditional way to start your wedding is to have a conch blown three times to signify the divine presence.

For ultimate romantic entertainment, why not have have a hula dancer do the traditional wedding hula to the "Hawaiian Wedding Song"?

With only a few details you can truly have a romantic tropical wedding.

Crazy About Cage Veils

I recently did the flowers for a fabulous wedding at The Atwood Ranch. I fell in love with the veil the bride wore. It's a bird cage veil, short, sassy, and elegant. These veils have been around for years. Women wore them in the 40's and 50's all the time. Very vintage inspired! I'm really happy to see they've made quite the comeback! There's no stopping the creativity here! Gems, feathers, pearls, crystals, flowers, are just a few of the materials that can go into making these very chic short styled veils.

San Francisco Floral Designer: Bouquets To Art

Bouquets To Art at the de Young Museum has been going on all week and today is the final day. It used to be held at The Legion of Hono r, but has been at the De Young since it's renovation and opening 5 years ago. I have been an assistant for my friend for the last 4 years, but this year I was so excited to have had my own spot and to be a part of this wonderful exhibit. It has been a tradition in San Francisco for 26 years. It is a week long show featuring 150 floral displays interpreting the museum's permanent collection. It starts off with an opening night Gala and there are classes and high teas all week for people to enjoy. Put it on your calender for next year, because it is so special to see the beautiful flowers in the museum, as you stroll about and admire the art!

I just attended the inaugural Academy of Planners and Designers put on by Jean Marks and Jubilee Lau . What an amazing few days it was meeting so many talented and fun people in the industry. There were lectures from New York's top leading event designers like my favorite David Beahm who I was thrilled to meet, and the lovely and funny, Tara Guerard.

Besides learning from all the talented professionals, there was plenty of partying too. The first night was the Emerald Cocktail party that the incredibly creative Gloria Wong designed. And to top it off the second night Gloria designed The Museum of Petals in honor of Grace Ormonde from Wedding style Magazine. These rooms were gorgeous and such a treat for all the designers to enjoy!

There also were showcase rooms to visit done by designers like AsielDesign, Grant & Company, Tara Guerard and Nancy Liu Chin. I got to help set up Nancy's room, that was stunning in pinks and purple hues. Each room was different and reflected the designer's individuality.

I am so honored to have met the attendees, all such fabulous, talented and nice people. They make me proud to be part of the wedding and event industry! Thank you to everyone!

Spring Blossoms

Finally glorious spring is here in Northern California. There is no doubt that a bride who gets married in March takes her chances if her wedding is outdoors. But to be married amongst fragrant blossoms, and green hills with treasures of wildflowers couldn't be more romantic. The risk of a rain shower can be solved with a tent and umbrellas for the guests. Or maybe to be safe- it is best to wait a month and have a floral stylist create a chuppah or canopy that brings the magic of spring to life.

A Favorite Inspiration

There is no floral designer that has inspired my own work and that is more entertaining a teacher than Ron Morgan. Watching him create centerpieces is like going to a ballet, or a concert. He makes it seem so easy to create such breathtaking arrangements. His sense of color and combinations of materials are gorgeous. He is a master at his craft and I am fortunate to have seen him in action many times over the last 18 years. He has been an inspiration in my career as a floral designer. Whether I am doing fresh, dried, or silk arrangements Ron's demos have taught me so much about flowers and how to arrange them. He has four books published that I keep on my coffee table for reference and enjoyment. They are" The Center of Attention", "In the Company of Flowers", "The Glass Act", and "A Celebration of Clematis." All of them come highly recommended and are a great addition to anyone's library. Interview with Wedding DJ Jason Mitchell

What music brings the most people to the dance floor at weddings/

events?

Everybody loves Usher. People can't help themselves. Seriously though,

people tend to gravitate towards music that was popular when they were

growing up, which is what makes DJin' Weddings challenging because you

have such a huge spread in age range, from 5 years old to 95 years old.

Not only does the music have to be accessible to a huge range in people,

it also has to be appropriate. Whats appropriate to a 35 year old isn't

for a 65 year old. That said, it also has to be fun! Van Morrison is great

with kids and adults. Michael Jackson has been huge this year, of course.

A good mix of 80's, 90's, and current hip hop always goes over well too.

What are the perks of using a DJ vs a live band at a wedding?

Cost is huge, but so are playlists. No matter how long a band has been

playing together, they can't bring 60,000+ songs to an event. Sound

quality and volume control vary greatly too. Unless a band is super

professional with a sound tech, there's no way they can come close in

sound quality. This may not seem important, but when you're facilitating

dancing and conversation for 100+ people, the quality of the sound is as

important as volume. A lot of DJs are guilty of bringing "dirty" sound as

well.

Not that bands aren't great though, I played in probably every type of

band growing up, from Jazz to Funk, and Metal to Punk. It all comes down

to personal preference, and with anything, you get what you pay for.

How closely do you work with couples to select a wedding playlist?

I start out by sitting down with the couple and getting to know them and

the background of their guests. After getting to know the age, social,

economic, and heritage background of both families I start working on

playlists based on their musical preferences. How involved the couple gets

involved is based on their preferences, but I always bring a lot of

everything to events, because you always want to be prepared.

What's the funniest dance move you've seen while working an event?

My mother dancing to Little John's "Salt Shaker" at my cousin's Wedding.

You'd have to be there to believe it.

Below we listed and addressed some of the most common ideas and concerns we heard from brides, grooms, families and friends at the Modern Luxury Bridal Show.

Hopefully this will help you all out!

Peonies are such beautiful flowers, what colors do they come in, when are they in season and how much do they usually cost?

We used many "Double Flowered" Peonies in many of our sample bouquets and received a ton of interest about this wonderful flower. I've always been fond of the peony and consider it not only one of my favorite flowers, but the ultimate wedding flower due to its romantic and soft appearance.

What colors do they come in -Peonies most commonly come in the following colors:

Light Pink, Fuchsia Pink, Coral Pink, White, Red, Maroon, and Yellow.

When are they in season-Local peonies are known to be seasonal throughout Spring [ April - June ], depending on variety. Currently peonies can be shipped from other areas so that they are available all year round at a slightly higher price. Peonies do best in temperatures that aren't too hot.

How much do they usually cost-Peonies cost about twice what a rose costs so they're a bit on the higher price range.

Should the Brides Maids' dresses match their bouquets?

The simple answer is: No, they don't have to. Everything in a wedding does not need to be super "matchy". We recommend looking at your wedding as a whole and choosing flowers that compliment your look. Monochromatic color schemes can be beautiful, especially if flower bouquets blend different shades and hues of one color. But don't be afraid to explore other options! Work with your floral designer to find the perfect color palette for your bouquets.

This has been a fantastic three days attending Nancy Liu Chin's Wedding Floral Academy. Nancy is an amazing designer and an equally dynamic speaker! She has the ability to inspire you with her passion for flowers and the wedding industry. I have learned so much from this course, in so short a time! I wish it was for a week!

There were some great guest speakers, like Stacie Tamaki from "The Flirty Guide". She sat with us and shared her knowledge and experience on blogging , and how it helps us in business and in life. Best of all I have met some wonderful people and talented designers from all parts of the country whom I hope to stay in touch with.

Nancy has a gift to both inspire and to challenge each person in the class. She wants everyone to go for it and reach their own individual potential, and to be a success!

I am off to practice and practice some more!

Thank you to everyone who visited the Savage Rose booth at the Dream Day Bridal Show in Santa Rosa this past weekend! The show was a huge success and so much fun.

We appreciate everyone's positive feedback, compliments, interest and overall encouragement with Savage Rose. A big thanks to the Savage Rose team for helping make the day a huge success!

More than anything we loved getting to know the brides-to-be who dropped by and spoke with us about their Big Day. Thank you ladies (and gents) for telling us all your wedding flower plans and dreams.

An Artist and Inspiration to All

I consider myself blessed to know Lil. She is an amazing artist who, in her 90s, still teaches and continues painting and following her passion, wherever it leads her.

On my last visit I took these photos of her work that she has done throughout the years. It is so current and timeless.

Her home is a studio that should be in a magazine! It is designed by her, so she can both live, work on and display her art. It is a feast for the senses. The rug, the pillows, the paintings, the murals on the walls--everything is made by her.

A great artist, Lil's in a class of her very own!

Floral designs created recently inspired by a palette of soft purples, cool blues and silver greens. Many of the flowers we used were picked up from the local farmer's market!

A Summer Harvest

California's notorious Indian Summer has arrived! Here are some new creations we made at Savage Rose inspired by the theme of Late Summer Harvest. We created bold, neoclassical designs with warm colors offset by cool water blues. This style looks amazing for a french-country or rustic-summer wedding. We also had a lot of fun creating unique boutonnieres with unexpected details.

Pink Peonies & Garden Roses

Here's a glimpse at some bouquets and arrangements I designed for recent weddings. If only peonies were blooming all year long! They are so fluffy and happy, the ideal flower for a party or wedding. Things are getting busy as we are orchastrating our "game plan" for a Wedding Show coming up that Savage Rose is featured in. More on that later.

We are busy at Savage Rose. This photo was for a vintage style wedding. It took place in a garden, small and chic. I loved working with the tulips and such a warm palette.

The Bouquets To Art

The Bouquets To Art is at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and is celebrating it's 25th year! I am in the event for my fourth year, assisting my dear friend Judy, who has been in the Bouquets to Art for fifteen years!

If you have the opportunity, you must go and see the spectacular floral displays! It is an ode to spring, where each artist creates a floral piece , that reflects an assigned painting or sculpture. There are demonstrations from the most talented people in the floral industry. Today I got to see Ron Morgan in action. I have been going to his demonstrations for eighteen years, and every time I am enthralled by his work! He travels extensively throughout the country, and has a huge fan base of garden enthusiasts, and floral lovers!
